In seinem Lehrgedicht "Liebeskunst" (Ars Amandi), erschienen im Jahre 1, lehrte der Dichter den Leser, wie und wo er beispielsweise ein Mädchen kennenlernt, wie man es für sich gewinnt und wie die Liebe bestehen und spannend bleibt, (vgl.: S. 102). Man hat Gelegenheit auch hier Auszüge aus dem Lehrgedicht zu lesen und wird mit dem letzten Vers der "Metamorphosen" konfrontiert. Ich ahnte nicht, wie stark der Einfluss der Werke Ovids auf die Kunst und Literatur des Mittelalters, der Renaissance, der Neuzeit und der Moderne war. Nicht nur in der Literatur, sondern auch in der bildenden Kunst und in der Musik kommt der Einfluss Ovids zur Geltung.
Mir gefällt, wie mit wenigen Sätzen Senecas Philosophie, die bekanntermaßen eine angewandte Ethik ist, dem Leser zugänglich gemacht wird.
Die Tatsache, dass man Gelegenheit hat, in viele Originaltextübersetzungen hineinzulesen, macht für mich das Buch besonders reizvoll, denn mir waren nicht alle Texte der Autoren geläufig. Of the scattered sentences has fallen from me that Sallust best. It reads: "Happiness makes people happy, adversity make him great." I think the sentence is so true today as 2,000 years ago.
