In the introduction we learn that the book would like to invite you to explore the world to read and dream in this way in distant lands and foreign cultures. The tour guides the interested reader from Europe to Asia, to Oceania and from there to Africa, South America and schließlich auch nach Nordamerika.
Vorgestellt werden im Rahmen von beispielhaften Buchbesprechungen 80 große Romane des 20. Jahrhunderts, die in bestimmten Ländern und dort an bestimmten Orten spielen. Neben den Buchbesprechungen wird stets auch der Autor kurz vorgestellt und es ist nicht selten ein Notabene angefügt, dem man Wissenswertes entnehmen kann.
Es führt zu weit alle Romane und Autoren jetzt aufzulisten. Gefallen hat mir, dass man immer ein paar Zeilen aus dem jeweiligen Buch zitiert hat und man auch immer wieder zwischendurch mit einladenden Bildern zum gedanklichen oder gar tatsächlichen Reisen verlockt wird, aber auch zum Kauf des ein oder anderen Buches, nachdem man sich in die entsprechenden Zusammenfassungen vertieft hat.
Auf Seite 73 ff fand ich eine Buchzusammenfassung des Romans "Am Hang" von Markus Werner, den ich vor einigen Jahren auf Amazon rezensiert habe. Der Verfasser dieser Buchzusammenfassung hat die Essenz des Buches sehr gut wiedergegeben. Dass man schon nach der Buchbesprechung Lust bekommt in das Tessin zu reisen, steht außer Frage und so sieht es bei allen anderen Buchbesprechungen ebenfalls aus. Fernweh stellt sich ein, man möchte schnell die Koffer packen und beispielsweise nach Paris reisen und tut es gedanklich not right away.
writes Hemingway: "One day I met Joyce, of the Boulevard Saint Germain entlangkam" after he had been alone in a matinee He heard the actors to be happy, if he also could not see, he asked me.. on, something to drink with him and we went into the "Deux Magots and ordered tart sherry, although they will always read that he only drank Swiss white wine." (Quote p. 29) I like these inserted quotes from the books to be discussed, because they're more curious about the text. How nice it must be in the morning when the sun was starting to lie awake in bed in a hotel and a Saint Germain wenig in Hemingways " "Paris - ein Fest fürs Leben" zu lesen, um anschießend im "Deux Margot" seinen ersten Kaffee zu genießen.
Sehr gut zusammengefasst sind auch Canettis "Stimmen von Marrakesch“. Man erfährt u.a., dass man durch Canettis Augen eine reizvolle Innenansicht der orientalischen und jüdischen Gesellschaft erlebt und dass er sich dabei keiner Klischees bedient, sondern das alltägliche Leben nachzeichnet, ( vgl.: S.183). Stimmt und es stimmt auch, dass "Stimmen von Marakesch" mehr als nur eine Reisebericht ist. Es ist wahr, es handelt sich tatsächlich um eine Sammlung von Momentaufnahmen a precise and curious observer, (see: p.183).
My praise is the summary of One Hundred Years of Solitude "by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It certainly was not easy, given how complex the novel. It rightly points out that the novel almost an encyclopedic work. This is to sum up less than four pages and last but no significance, is a masterpiece. respect.
Although I just do not read much, I know most of the discussed Novels are not, and certainly not those that are listed in the short discussions to continue traveling. The book reviews make me very curious about the foreignness described in Oceania, that paradise that inspired me most. Returning through the back door, "I will read for sure. It is a satire that plays on Tonga in the South Pacific. The author epilator Hau `ofa was the private secretary of the King of Tonga.
also Ahdaf Soueif, "The Map of Love" I want to read. The love story that is told seems to be gripping.
My review, I would like to end with a quote that comes from a book which has been discussed on pages 171 ff. It is a passage from "Crime of the Day to the Night" by Yamina Khadra, the I find so moving that I want to tell her: "What is love, if it grants only pain How good are their myths and legends, victories and wonder if the lovers are unable to grow beyond itself, the anger? to face the sky, to let go of the eternal happiness for a kiss, a hug, a moment around? " (Quotation p. 174)
Recommended, because the book arouses curiosity, stimulates to dream and actually contains exemplary book reviews.
