Review: Massimo Marini Rolf Dobelli
The writer Rolf Dobelli (Top 10 reviewer on Amazon) is a quotation from his novel Georg Büchner's "Woyzeck", 5th Scene ahead, "" South-North! Ha! Ha! Ha!. Oh, he is stupid, very stupid disgusting. Woyzeck, he is a good man, a good man, but he has no morals! The morality, if one is moral. "After the end of the novel again follows a quotation from Büchner's drama Woyzeck good. You're a good man, a good person. But you think too much, the exhausted, you look always look so incited. The discourse has attacked me quite a bit. `Go now and race is not so;..? slowly, pretty slowly down the street "
Even before I started reading the book made me curious about the quotes, what do they do these two quotes with the contents of the book there ? Dobellis parallels between the protagonist and surrounded by Büchner's drama
Wikipedia Büchner's drama as follows: "The simple soldier Franz Woyzeck, his girlfriend Marie and the common illegitimate child, just live like it on the edge of society, to support attempts, works as an errand boy for his captain. In addition, it can be by an unscrupulous doctor as a test subject to pea diet Change in order to receive an additional merit of his meager pay, he completely delivers on Marie (and child). Captain and doctor Woyzeck use physically and psychologically from him and humiliate in public. Marie begins an affair with a drum major. Woyzecks burgeoning suspicion is it not friendly minded people stirred up, until he caught his rival Marie and dancing in the pub. He hears voices commanding him to kill the unfaithful Marie. Because his money is not sufficient for buying a gun, he picks up a knife and stabs Marie in a forest near a lake. "
I still had not started the book to read the pages, looking for a brief illuminating summary of what was to decide whether I'm going with this novel, or rather not found on page 358 that what I was looking for. "Massismos lifelong experiment in steadfastness Its amazing changes here from the Italian. immigrant child to Zurich socialites. From the Opera House protesters to the Opera house sponsor. From the existentialists to the contractor. From the tunnel drill for Stradivari owners. From left to right. From the depths to the heights. From south to north. His monstrous movement on the coordinate grid of life. And then the flash a woman who destroyed everything. The size of his rise and fall. The chronology of terror. "
His father makes himself then as a freelance contractor. Massimo is an excellent student, one of the best in his class, is interested in philosophy, literature and at school in the drama group of the star. The role of Woyzeck begins his left-slip. His father does not like this development because he wants his son, his company and still continue not to unimagined heights leads.
Massimo enrolled after high school is not in architecture, as he pretends to be home, but instead secretly in philosophy. In 1979, he left Zurich, studied a semester at the Sorbonne and hoped for a resurgence of 1968. Massimo is an idealist who wants to fight against injustice, which holds according to Sartre, Camus and Cohn-Bendit lookout and longs for street barricades and tear gas, (see: p. 153). All this he finds in Paris does not go back to Zurich and is there for the approval of the costly renovation of the opera house active because he would rather see the money invested in an autonomous youth center. This leads to confrontations with the police, he is arrested. His father is disappointed in him. Massimo is now to Berlin, to enroll in literature and philosophy.
Dass er nach 20 Jahren seine Frau wegen einer Cellistin verlässt, hängt wohl weniger with his ascension consciousness finally be part of the Swiss upper classes together, as they accused him, but probably more with his repressed intellectual vocation. Massimo is not really a tunnel builder, his world is a spiritual one. That his two wives have cheated him, makes it clear that he has failed in life and that because he owned in everything he bought, he was never himself.
It is shocking that all women in the book, with the exception of Massimo's mother, can not be faithful. The infidelity of the student Clare and his wives Monica and Julia are the cause of Massimo's tragic history. How is it possible that such a beautiful, intelligent Man in fact is so unlucky with women? Does it related to the fact that women have a keen sense of when a man is standing next to him?
The characters in the book are worked out very well. The particularly been the case even on Julia, who is aged 35 years, pregnant by a 15 year old Raphael, the supposed son Massimo, and also the lawyer who does not suffer unduly from depression.
Most interesting is to read all the factual information about the tunnel. High - low and underground mining was for me been a closed book.
Woyzeck has far more in common with Massimo as you think. Not only that they are confronted with the infidelity of women, but also that both are humiliated in their authenticity, they make related to each other, but not to twin brothers.
Highly recommended.
